‘Yesterday’ – a review

Since the movie ‘Bend It Like Beckham’ was last screened, I always on the lookout for a similar movie; a cheeky movie that is performed by a non-English actor in an overall English movie. Imagine my reaction, when ‘Yesterday’ preview was shown on YouTube, I was really ecstatic and cannot wait for it to be released.

The movie was about a struggling singer-songwriter, Jack Malik, that was played by Himesh Patel. Together with his lifelong childhood best friend Ellie, that was played by Lily James, Jack’s fate seems going nowhere in his career. Somehow, a freak accident that has caused a global blackout, Jack’s fate took a turn to a better. Having gone through an accident during that blackout, Jack woke up from the injuries with a recollection of famous names and brand that were mysteriously erased from the face of the planet.

Having realized that he possessed the songs of one of world greatest band, The Beatles, he sets to charm the world with this newfound talent. Jack is on the path of stardom when Ed Sheeran himself asked him to open his concert in Russia. From that moment on, nothing is going wrong with Jack, with most of the songs he sang topping the chart all over the world.

This is where the dilemma eventually caught up with him. Jack had to choose between the people worshipping him as one of the greatest prolific singer-songwriters or living the lie; that he is basically ripping to call The Beatles songs as his own. At the same time, his relationship with Ellie was affected, as he has to move to LA to pursue his newfound fame.

In the end, the guilt is consuming him so much, that he had to stage a confession during one of Ed Sheeran’s concert.

Overall, the movie is seriously entertaining, at least for me. It is a simple idea and yet very captivating. I thoroughly enjoyed the whole two hours of it. It truly deserves his own merit, and the background of The Beatles songs is truly a special bonus that you won’t want to miss.
